Sant Elm is a small coastal town of Andratx opposite the end of the islet is Pantaleu and Dragonera Island. Originally a small fishing village called Sa Palomera, but with the advent of mass tourism in the mid-twentieth century became a tourist town with summer houses, apartments, restaurants and several hotels. It currently has a population of about 500 inhabitants living mainly from tourism. Despite the urban development of recent decades, Sant Elm still retains the charm of the small fishing village it once was. The sandy beach, Cala en Basset Conills and the islet of Es Pantaleu and the island of Sa Dragonera make extremely attractive natural surroundings.
On a hill behind the village, stands a unique building called the Torre de Sant Elm, ranked in 1985 as a Cultural building. This was the chapel and the hospital founded in the XIII century by King James II, set to which was added later the tower defence and surveillance. Because of frequent attacks by pirates in the sixteenth century the hospital function ceased, keeping active the church and tower. In the late nineteenth century the estate was bought by the Archduke Luis Salvador and is now owned by the Foundation Illes Baleares. Another old building to highlight is the Tower of Cala en Basset which was built in the sixteenth century to increase surveillance on the coast. The most remarkable in the history of this area occurred on September 7, 1229 when the ships of King James I Catalan moored between Sant Elm and Dragonera to prepare for the landing on the beach of Santa Ponsa, which initiated the conquest of Mallorca.
Sant Elm, as the neighbouring town of s’Arracó is an excellent starting point for various excursions on foot and the climb to La Trappe passing through the Camí de Can Tomeuí and offers stunning views over Cala en Basset, the tower and the island of Sa Dragonera. The visit to the island of Sa Dragonera also allows for various hiking and you can enjoy extraordinary views of the coast.
The village festival is held in early August with a maritime procession, Mass in the Church and verbena. The most anticipated event of the festivities is the traditional battle between Moors and Christians which takes place on the beach on Easter Monday, when the Pancaritat held in the Tower of Sant Elm, is also an important day for the people.
