In 2001, a scientific research team led by Nicolas Babault PhD of the University of Burgundy in Dijon, France was carried out to examine how many muscle fibres were activated and for how long during traditional weight training and isometric training.
They discovered that when training intensely in near-perfect style, the levels of muscle activation during repetitions of maximal weight training were an average of 89% taking into account both the concentric (shortening of the muscle/lifting phase) and the eccentric (lengthening/lowering) phases of the repetition, revealing also that the maximum intramuscular tension only lasted for an average of 1/3rd of a second during each isotonic (moving) repetition. This is because force is only produced for a split second due to movement.
A static muscle performing an isometric exercise will produce more force than a muscle performing an isotonic exercise. The amount of force produced decreases with velocity.
In comparison, this research proved that the level of muscle activation during isometric exercise was as high as 95.2% and that it lasted for the entire 7 to 10-second period of each hold.
Based on these findings, one single isometric exercise performed at only two-thirds of an individual’s maximum intensity can deliver the equivalent or better intramuscular tension than that of 3 sets of 10 near-perfect traditional weight training repetitions.
You now see it takes several minutes for 89% muscle activation during traditional isotonic training and just 10 seconds for 95.2% during an isometric exercise.
